The Artist's Life
Family Origins
Theodoros Markellos was born on April 23, 1925, in Athens, Greece, where he lived and worked for most of his life. He descends from the historically significant Markellos family, known since the Greek War of Independence in 1821. His great-grandfather, the revolutionary Spyridon Markellos, took part in the sieges of Corinth and Athens and served as a representative of the island of Aegina in the first national assemblies of independent Greece. The notable family building — the Markellos Tower on the island of Aegina — served as a revolutionary headquarters and as an administrative center when Aegina was the temporary capital of Greece (1827–1829).
Education
From 1948 to 1953, Markellos studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, graduating with the sole special distinction in his diploma examinations. During his studies, he received five academic awards: for figure painting (1951–52), plein air painting (1951–52), mixed techniques (1951–52), figure drawing (1952–53), and the diploma distinction for his work "Female Nude" (1953).
In 1954, he won a state scholarship from Spain and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he studied for three years (1954–1957). The Spanish period had a profound influence on his art; he immersed himself in the great Spanish museums and the tradition of Velázquez.
In 1960, Markellos was awarded a university scholarship from the Athens School of Fine Arts and continued his development at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1960–1962), where he spent four formative years absorbing the French artistic tradition and painting the city in all seasons and weather.
Awards & International Recognition
In 1957, Markellos received an international distinction at the VI World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow for his painting "Gypsy". In 1963, he was awarded a Silver Medal at the "Premio Mugello" national painting competition in Italy. Throughout his career, he was recognized by major art critics in Spain, Italy, France, and Greece.
Markellos Gallery in Trikala
In 1997, Markellos donated a significant collection of his paintings to the Municipality of Trikala (near Meteora). The gallery bearing his name — the Pinakothiki Theodorou Markellou — was officially opened on January 19, 1999, in a beautifully restored old building near the Municipal Folklore Museum. The gallery houses selected works personally chosen by the artist from his vast body of work, comprising over 2,000 paintings. View gallery information (PDF)
