THE WORLD OF EXHIBITIONS
Landscape by Th. Markellos
The painter Theodoros Markellos, born in 1925 and a graduate of the School of Fine Arts, is exhibiting at Gallery “Argyro”. This is a particularly interesting case, based on the possibilities of a “Cezannesque” expressionism of great expressive power. Markellos shapes his world through color (modulation), which is not only his primary tool but also his most essential expressive medium. And the human being, this world is abstract, active, more accurately in a continuous process of becoming. The contrasts of tones are intense, as is always the case with painting that does not seek to depict nature, but to interpret it.
Work by Christina Zervou
Thus, the image becomes subjective: it is the deeply personal experience of a sensitive individual who does not merely look to grasp what exists around him, but imbues it with his own touch. Certainly, over the years, Markellos has developed a marked ease in formulating his themes. Great comfort removes any sense of forced effort from his paintings. Nowhere does he “stumble”. Everything flows and is shaped with naturalness and persuasiveness. Only the expressively significant is retained, and for this reason detail is bypassed, while the abstract disposition ultimately weaves together a whole of color patches.
