★ THE TURKS ARE LOOTING CYPRIOT ANTIQUITIES.
This is not, of course, a new finding; the Athenian News Agency reported another incident yesterday. The Department of Antiquities of Cyprus announced that the Cyprus Museum recently acquired a unique clay idol from the 13th century, depicting a horse with a rider. The clay idol was smuggled out of the Turkish-occupied area and appeared on the London market. The British Museum notified the Director of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, who purchased the idol for the Museum for 4,200 pounds, paid by the Cypriot Ambassador to UNESCO, Mr. K. Leventis. Thus, the stolen idol returned to its homeland.
★ A TASTE OF VENICE: The legendary city of the Doges is presented with a different sensibility through the paintings of Theodoros Markellos, which are currently on display in the solo exhibition of the distinguished painter at the “Collection” art gallery (4 V. Sofias). “The works I am presenting in this exhibition,” he says in the catalog, “are a revisit to the Venices I painted during three trips I made there over time. It is a unity, which, as always, I am accustomed to presenting in my exhibitions, attempting to convey not only my emotions in this space, but to make the visitors of my exhibitions travel emotionally with me to the places I express at any given time... With my Venices, I try to interpret a unique space whose appearance the centuries have not been able to change, aesthetically.” In the past, Markellos has repeatedly presented such thematic unities: Istanbul, Paris, Pelion, Shipyards, Islands of Thessaloniki — and this interesting exhibition...
