The Parisian Landscapes of Th. Markellos
AT THE EXHIBITION OF "PARNASSOS"

The painter Theodoros Markellos offers a heartfelt dedication, imbued with moving sentiment, to the Paris of his artistic studies with his second solo exhibition in the large hall of "Parnassos" in Athens. Under the auspices of the Hellenic-French Association, he presents approximately one hundred of his oil paintings, most of which depict views of various spots in the French capital.

Markellos renders the Parisian landscapes with post-impressionist stylistic concerns, shaped according to the teachings of the training he received at various art schools in Madrid (1954 - 1956) and Paris (1960 - 1962) on scholarships awarded after he received his diploma from the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1952 with five honors.

Markellos' participation in group exhibitions began with the Panhellenic Exhibition of 1952 and continued in other exhibitions in Athens, Madrid, the "Olympia" in Paris, Moscow, Florence, Rome, Milan, Vienna, and Bucharest, while his previous seven solo exhibitions took place in Madrid (1956), Athens (1958, 1967), Florence, Milan, Trieste, and at the "Jefferson" University in Philadelphia.

Painting exclusively Paris, Markellos captures the characteristics of the natural and emotional atmosphere of the French capital with such adaptation of his style to his defined subject matter that the impression is given that the paintings in this "Parnassos" exhibition were created by a French or internationalist painter entirely outside the Greek art tradition and unrelated to the mindset and spiritual world of the Greeks.

With masterful expressive skill and other significant innate painterly virtues, Markellos—as seen in the exhibits at "Parnassos"—has directed the main interest of his art toward the creation of works of higher quality, with a lyrical tone of romantic disposition, which prevails with stronger pulse and greater chromatic harmony and subtlety in his compositions featuring "still life" themes.
