About This Work
Amber light from a row of windows reaches the canal below, a spire marking the far end of the gabled street.
Gabled houses line the canal in a slow rhythm, their rooflines leading toward a faint spire at the back. A bridge threads across the middle, while the foreground holds quiet cobbles and the soft mirror of the water below. Indigo and slate carry most of the night, broken by ochre from the windows and touches of umber and violet in the shadows—colors that keep the darkness alive instead of flat. The brushwork stays smooth across sky and water, then thickens slightly on brick and foliage. Lantern light catches edges of stone and rippling reflection, fading at the borders into the moisture-laden air that holds this sleeping street in its quiet.
