Makrinitsa with Reflected Light
M877
About This Work
Makrinitsa at high noon — stone walls trading light back and forth, house to house, in no particular hurry.
A kind of timelessness settles over this place. The houses climb the hillside in soft layers, one resting on the next. Sun-bleached whites and warm earth tones are answered by the cooler lavenders of the far-off slopes. But it's the light… it doesn't just fall from above. It bounces from stone to stone, filling the shadows with a borrowed glow, a pale warmth instead of flat darkness. You can almost feel the texture of the rough plaster. The sunlit edges are so crisp. Everything else just softens into the air. Quiet settles over the hillside, holding the village in the long hush of a Mediterranean afternoon.
