Venice Canal, Small Bridge, Harbor Area
M1509
About This Work
A pale stone arch spans the canal, terracotta walls pressing close on either side, the harbor a pale opening in the distance.
There’s a tranquility to this light, a warmth that belongs only to the late afternoon. See how the sun-bleached terracotta of the walls sinks into cooler greens and slate grays where the shadows fall. You can almost feel the texture of crumbling plaster where the paint is thickest. And then the water is just glassy smoothness, carrying reflections of the sky and the dark lines of window frames. Everything softens as you look down the canal toward the distant harbor. It’s a place where time slows, settling in the quiet space between the stones.
