About This Work

A single cobalt shutter interrupts the terracotta facade of a Madrid street held under a high, still afternoon sun.

The whole street seems to be breathing in the slow warmth of the afternoon. Our view leads down between the buildings, their rooflines softening as they recede into the pale sky. The walls are a conversation of terracotta and sun-bleached white. See how the brushwork is smooth there? Then look down at the cobblestones, or near a balcony—the paint gets thicker, catching the light on what might be old iron. I love that little flash of cobalt on a shutter, a cool note against all that warmth. Even the shadows feel soft, pooling in shades of slate and umber. The light is high and gentle. A quietness carries through the streets, as if time slows here.
