Madrid Bullfight

About This Work
Just ochre sand and a flash of gold at the matador's shoulder. It's the center of everything. The heat of the arena presses in.
There’s a quiet that settles over the ring, just for this moment. The matador is just off-center, his cape a flared diagonal answering the dark mass of the bull. Behind them, the tiered seats dissolve into a blur of marks—you feel the crowd without seeing a single face. The earth of the ground is all deep reds and ochres, so warm, and then these little touches of gold lift his suit, the traje de luces, from the animal's hide. The paint is so careful on the two of them, but looser on the crowd, letting all the energy gather right here. And the light falls so hard, cutting those sharp shadows. The air holds that long breath before the next pass, taut and slow.
