Makrinitsa, Village Houses, No Sky
M1255
About This Work
Makrinitsa fills the canvas tier by tier—stone walls, tiled roofs, stacked balconies—leaving almost no sky.
There’s a warmth to these houses, a feeling of them leaning into one another up the steep slope. The view climbs in tiers through clustered balconies and narrow alleys that fill the whole space. The colors are all earth and plaster—ochre and sienna warming the stone, soft whites resting in the shade. The paint itself shifts as it moves. It's laid on thick across the walls but grows quieter under the eaves. The light is soft. It spreads evenly, sharpening only the rooflines that carry the rhythm up the hill. And even with no one in sight, the whole place feels held. Time slows here, patient and grounded, as if the village were holding its breath.
