About This Work

A stand of olive trees grows from warm soil, their twisting trunks creating a path across the breadth of an open landscape under a soft sky.

The scene opens along a diagonal, as gnarled trunks ground the composition against a low horizon, giving space for the dense, silvery-green canopies to fill the air. Warm ochres and umbers color the earth, a contrast to the muted foliage, while pale cerulean and lavender wash over a sky warmed by gentle light from the upper left. Broad, fluid strokes shape the atmosphere, a smooth counterpoint to the layered applications of paint suggesting the gnarled feel of old bark and the clustered softness of leaves. Long shadows stretch over the ground, following the land’s gentle contours and creating a sense of volume. Stillness settles on the sunlit earth.
