Skopelos from Heights, the Churches
M1161
About This Work
Red-tiled domes mark the ridge above Skopelos, the rooftops stepping down toward a wide stretch of Aegean blue.
The whole island seems held in this high, clear sun. Its light warms the rocky foreground and climbs across the clustered rooftops, settling on the churches that crown the hill. Their whitewashed walls glow with ochre. The red domes are so sharp against the deep blues of the sky and sea. Each building is drawn with a quiet precision, the lines of the bell towers so steady, while the sea and sky are softer, brushed in a way that lets the air move through. The shadows are short and crisp. A held quiet sits over the rooftops, as if time itself has paused on the ridge.
