Kastraki, Meteora
MK470
About This Work
Kastraki nestles low beneath the sandstone spires, its terracotta rooftops dwarfed by those great columns of ochre and sienna.
The whole valley seems to be holding its breath in this light. You can follow the little path as it winds through the village, past whitewashed walls and terracotta roofs toward those great spires. Look how their sunlit faces hold the warmth of ochre and sienna, while cool lavender settles deep into the shadows. Sage greens dot the olives at their feet. The paint itself feels different across the canvas—so smooth in the sky, but thick and broken on the stone, like it’s tracing the weathered rock. The light comes in low, stretching the shadows out and lifting the eastern facets into a soft glow. A held quiet rests over the village, slow and patient as the stone itself.
