Skyros

About This Work
Skyros at full afternoon: pale houses climbing the hill, their shadows cut sharp and ultramarine against the ochre earth.
A stillness settles over the whole slope. You can feel the path the light takes, starting on those warm foreground rocks before rising through the cluster of pale houses. Ochre earth gives way to olive scrub, but it’s the white of the village that holds you, so bright against the deep ultramarine shadows pooled at the base of the walls. Look how the paint itself changes. It breathes across the wide sea and sky, then becomes firmer where it builds the stone. You can almost feel the thickness of it resting on the sunlit roofs. The light is so clear, carving the sharpest shadows. A long afternoon settles over the island, patient and unhurried, holding everything in its slow Aegean hush.
