About This Work

Stemnitsa rests across a hillside, its stone houses stepping down the slope in quiet, rhythmic order. The arrangement feels natural, a gentle cascade of rooftops and walls reaching toward the valley floor.

The village feels warm, shaped from ochres and umbers that belong to the local stone and clay tiles. Cooler tones answer in slate-gray shadows and the muted green of distant pines. Careful brushwork gives definition to the foreground—a doorway, a patch of cobblestone—before softening into the far hills, letting distance dissolve into atmosphere. Light falls evenly from the upper left, bathing every surface in a gentle wash that models form without harshness. Roofs layer over one another in a quiet progression as chimneys and bell towers rise like vertical notes. The scene offers only the settlement’s enduring presence in the landscape, a feeling of solitude and permanence. Stillness settles over the sun-warmed stone.
