Venice Houses, Trees (No Canal)
M1515
About This Work
Olive canopies press close against shuttered Venetian walls—no canal, no landmark, just an ordinary street caught in paint.
There's a deep stillness to this little street. Look how the trees seem to breathe in the foreground, their soft olive foliage softening the staggered rooftops behind them. The walls hold all that warmth, those earthy umbers and terracottas, while cool gray shadows pool at their base. Distant blues rest quietly between the chimneys. The paint itself feels different where it lands—loose and breathing in the leaves, then firmer on plaster and brick. You can feel the age in the walls. Late afternoon light washes over everything from one side, leaving the alleys in soft shade. Closed shutters keep their secrets. A humid golden haze settles over the rooftops, and time slows in the quiet between the houses.
