About This Work
Brick and ochre housefronts follow the canal's edge, dissolving gradually into a damp, overcast gray.
A deep quiet seems to rest over everything. The boats are moored at soft angles, and the gabled housefronts just recede into the paler distance. Cool tones of slate and green give way to the warmth of ochre and brick in the buildings and a hull or two. The brushwork is so patient on the architecture, finding the window frames and rigging, then it loosens across the water. That soft, overcast light spreads evenly. It lifts gentle reflections from the canal and lets the shadows almost disappear. The streets are empty, the boats still at anchor. A quiet weight settles over the harbor, holding this hour in place.
