Athonite Monk

About This Work
A candle flame holds its place beside a prayer rope, both settled on wood that has taken on the smoothness of daily handling.
There's such a quiet intention to this arrangement. The objects seem to know their place—the prayer rope beside a simple spoon and what must be a book of psalms. The colors are all from the earth. Deep ochres and umbers meet a soft olive green, warmed by the whites of linen where the light touches. Look how the paint tightens on the book’s lettering and the wood grain, then breathes out into the grey-blue air behind. A gentle light drifts in from the side, finding the texture in frayed wool and the soft gleam of long use. The air holds the patient hush of a monk's cell at prayer.
