By the Sea, K. with Child

About This Work
An adult and a child face the open sea, their backs to the viewer, one orange-red shirt vivid against the broad turquoise water.
An adult and a child stand at the left, seen from behind, their gazes carried out across the open ocean toward a faint line of distant mountains. The shoreline curves away from them, leading the gaze across ochre and honey-brown sand into pale aquamarine and indigo at the horizon. Thick strokes of white and blue-green build the froth of breaking waves, while broad sweeping passages shape soft clouds touched with lavender and pale cream. The figures are resolved through blocks of color, the orange-red shirt and the child's pale yellow top defining their forms. Light is diffuse and even. There are no hard shadows, just a gentle illumination spread across sand and water. A tender hush settles over the afternoon, holding the two of them inside it.
