Goura Farmhouse with Chicken Coop
M1928
About This Work
Whitewashed walls hold the light against tawny earth, the farmhouse sitting low under a wide pale sky. Heat presses down.
There's a stillness here that belongs to midday—the kind that settles over a place where work continues without haste. The building anchors the left, balanced by the chicken coop and rough fencing across the right, while pathways draw inward toward the structure. Pecking hens and dry vegetation root the foreground; behind them, the land lifts toward soft hills. Ochres and siennas warm the soil, muted greens flicker in sparse shrubs, and terracotta catches the roof tiles against a pale sky that shifts from cerulean near the horizon upward. The artist drew window frames and coop slats with fine precision, then loosened into foliage and let the distant slopes blur into haze. Soft shadows model the buildings and terrain without harshness—light arriving from the upper left, patient and complete. The air holds its quiet here, dry and inhabited.
