About This Work

Carnagio at noon — low hulls drawn against pale walls, the Ionian blue sharp and open beyond.

There’s a deep quiet to this light. It pulls you in over the rocky ground, past the curve of those hulls and low buildings, and then lets you rest on the sea. The earth itself is warm—all sienna and soft umber. And the walls and boats are just simple shapes of ochre and chalky white against that incredible blue. Even the shadows aren't just dark; they hold cooler hints of slate and lavender. The paint lies so smooth on the water. But you can almost feel the texture on the rocks and wood, where thick strokes catch the sun. I love this part… how a cooler glow rises from the sea, bathing the undersides of the hulls. The whole scene just rests in a noon hush. It feels as if time slows here.
