About This Work
Afternoon sun strikes the terracotta facades of a Madrid plaza, casting sharp, clean shadows across the paving stones below.
The whole street seems to be holding its breath in this light. The space just opens up, from the paving stones here in front of us, back through layers of buildings that recede into a paler sky. All that warm terracotta on the walls is answered by cool blues in the shadows and just a touch of dusty green from the foliage. The paint feels thicker, more deliberate, on the nearest surfaces, but it softens as you look up. Light comes in from the side, doesn't it? It catches the hard edges of the cornices but leaves those deep, quiet pockets of shadow underneath. A held warmth settles over everything, as the city pauses for its own long afternoon.
