Zagora, The Oldest House
M2347
About This Work
Look at how the sun rests on those old stones. Ochre and bleached white against the pale sky. The heat sits over everything here.
Everything feels so settled in this light. The old house seems to hold it all, down there in the corner, its terracotta roof and weathered front catching the soft sun. The slant of the other roofs, the little paths—they all seem to point back toward it. The colors are all baked earth and sun, ochres and siennas warmed against the soft greens and that hazy blue sky. And you can feel the difference in the paint. See how carefully the brush moves over the old stonework, around the windows? Then it just loosens, breathing into the hills. The shadows are so gentle. They give the stone shape without any hardness. The air feels still, holding the long memory of the place at the edge of an unhurried noon.
