About This Work
Kastela's rooftops descend in tight rows to the harbour, their terracotta warm against a flat cobalt sea.
There’s a quiet over this place, a stillness that belongs to the middle of the day. The shoreline leads up through the clustered rooftops—all warm terracotta and sienna—into the wide blue beyond. The walls are pale ochre and sun-bleached white, the paint laid on thick. Then it all smooths out for the water and sky. The light is so strong, falling from high up. It carves these sharp, dark shadows under the balconies, lifting the fronts of the houses into relief. The boats are barely moving. The air sits still over the rooftops, as if time itself has slowed.
