Nios, Houses, Apple Trees in Background
MK236
About This Work
Apple trees crown the upper edge of the canvas, their broad canopies rising just above the rooflines of Ios.
Everything feels so settled here, the way the houses just rest into the land. They spill down the slope, these clusters of ochre and white with their terracotta roofs. Your eye travels past them, over the sun-bleached earth dotted with sage and olive greens, and lifts toward the rounded canopies of apple trees at the horizon. It’s so still. Look how the paint on the walls is smooth, while the foliage breathes with looser, more textured strokes. The light is direct, falling from high above and carving out short shadows, yet even the shaded sides seem to hold a warm, reflected glow. The air sits quiet over the village, slow and unhurried, the way an Aegean afternoon settles into itself.
