Red Kaiki at Mooring
M1942
About This Work
A terracotta kaiki rests at the quay, its hull bright against cool aquamarine, the mast upright beneath a pale, open sky.
A deep quiet settles over this mooring, a midday warmth. The boat just rests, its mast rising into a sky of soft cerulean and bone white. Behind it, sun-bleached stone meets the shoreline in touches of ochre and warm grey, and the water shifts from aquamarine to deeper slate where the hull meets its reflection. The brushwork loosens across the sea—fluid in the open stretches, then gently fractured where ripples catch the light. The sun is high, laying soft shadows that don’t cut sharp. Nothing moves. Time just slows, and the whole afternoon holds its breath.
