Still Life with Mackerel
MK45
About This Work
A mackerel lies on the table, its flanks carrying the sea's silver, violet threading the scales where light catches.
The fish rests at the center, its sinuous form anchoring the composition while the eye traces along its length toward softer surrounds. Cool silvery grays carry hints of violet and pale green across the skin, answered by earth tones—ochre, umber, a muted red—in the cloth and wood behind. Tight strokes describe the scales with care, while looser handling shapes the background so it never competes for attention. A thin glaze lifts the belly into soft highlight, and light arrives from the upper left, modeling volume with gentle shadows rather than sharp contrast. The finish stays refined, attentive to small shifts of surface and tone. A hush settles over the table, and time seems to hold its breath.
