Trieste Area with Rain and Fog
M1979
About This Work
Fog has absorbed Trieste — rooftops, harbour mouth, and waterline merging into a single slate expanse.
The eye enters along a low horizon, drifting from soft foreground reflections toward dim architectural silhouettes that dissolve into fog. The palette holds to slate, pewter, and muted teal, with faint ochre warming the distant rooftops just enough to register as built form. Brushwork is fluid and largely wet into wet—blended transitions carrying the weight of the weather, while a few drier strokes mark a pier line and the soft ridge of a roof. Light comes from nowhere in particular, even and dim, suppressing shadow and flattening the harbour into tonal bands. Reflections on wet stone are diluted, edges softened to almost nothing. A hush settles over everything, the kind of quiet that only arrives when rain has been falling a long time.
