Hydra, After Rain, Harbor Without Sky
M1659
About This Work
Wet stone glistens along the waterfront. A slow gleam runs through ochre walls into the water. The quiet after rain holds.
A certain hush settles over the harbor now that the rain has passed. Whitewashed houses with their terracotta roofs step back from the water, their fronts broken by green shutters and the dark lines of masts. With no sky, everything feels closer, grounded. Your eye stays low, moving across the cobblestones and into puddles that hold the reflection of the buildings. Cool blues and grays pool in the shaded water and walls, while warm ochres and whites catch the last of the light. It’s a crisp, patient light, coming in from the side—just enough to lift the damp edges of wood and metal. The air feels rinsed and still, as if the harbor were holding its breath a moment longer.
