Outside Kavala Barracks, Trees, Houses, Mountains
M2168
About This Work
The Kavala Barracks hold the center of the composition, flanked by trees, with rooftops and mountain ridges receding into the distance behind them.
A kind of deep quiet holds this place. The barracks sit at the center of it, with trees rising up to frame the view toward the houses clustered nearby. All the warm earth tones and pale terracotta roofs give way to dusty greens, and then seem to dissolve into the cool grays and blues of the mountains beyond. The paint feels thick up close—you can almost touch the rough bark and plaster—but it loosens as you look further back. And the light is so gentle. It falls evenly, shaping the buildings without making any sharp edges. Nothing moves. Not a soul passes. A long quiet rests over everything, holding the afternoon in its slow hour.
