View Toward Kiato (Small Church)

About This Work
Near Kiato, a small bright church stands between scorched ochre fields and hills that dissolve into lavender.
Everything holds still in this light. The dry ground at our feet is all broken touches of sienna and olive green, leading the way toward the chapel. Beyond it, the land softens into pale blue ridges, and the sky is just a wash of cream and lilac. It’s all warm earth tones close to us, holding their own against the cool blues in the distance. And those little white walls catch the brightest sun. The paint itself feels different there, see? It’s laid on thicker, tighter than the soft brushwork in the hills and sky. A quiet settles over the open ground. It feels like one of those slow afternoons that asks for nothing at all.
