Fields Without Sky
M1818
About This Work
No sky — just furrow after furrow of bare earth, running unbroken from one edge of the canvas to the other.
There's such a quiet here. You feel as though you're standing right in the field, not looking from a distance. Your eye just travels sideways, following the low ridges and troughs. The colors are all earth—ochres and umbers, with soft greens and grays drifting through them. See those little pale highlights? Just where light finds some dry stubble. The paint feels closer down here, thick like turned earth, then it softens as it moves away. The light is so even. Without a sky, your gaze just sinks into the soil, into its quiet patience. A held stillness rests over the fields, as if the land has been left alone with itself.
